A leader is someone who can provide direction and vision, drive plans to success, and motivate others in their team to also achieve the common and personal goals.
An effective leader is someone that others want to follow, because they display admirable characteristics and provide helpful guidance. The presence of a true leader projects confidence, knowledge and also resilience in the face of adversity. Good leaders bring a little extra to the table with positive interpersonal skills, innovative ideas, and an ability to tactfully provide feedback.
Great leaders can extract results from their teams. They can push them beyond what they thought they were capable of doing, and in turn empower the team to feel they are powerful and great too.

What are the types of leadership styles?
There are different types of leaders which operate in different ways to work with their teams. Can you recognise yourself in any of the following?
• Authoritarian leaders – Keep their relationships entirely professional and directly supervise their staff. They create a leader and follower relationship to maintain control.
• Paternalistic leaders – These types of leaders take care of their staff as a parent may. This encourages trust and loyalty from employees, however sometimes can lean towards favouritism with some.
• Democratic leaders – A democratic leader shares the decision making within the business, however must express skills in tactfulness and fairness.
• Laissez-Faire – This type of leader gives the employee full power over their role and decision make associated with this. Problems can arise if the role of the employee does require feedback, supervision, and accountability.
• Transactional – Transactional leaders base their leadership style on providing rewards for good work and punishment for lack of results.
• Transformational leaders – These types of leaders question the thinking of their workers and drive them to think differently. They create a vision for their staff and challenge their way of doing things.
By tapping into your leadership style and improving your skills, you will be able to get the most out of your team’s performance.
